Description
Indonesian White Oud or Gaharu Buaya/Boya Essential Oil (Aetoxylon sympetalum)
The amber-coloured, steam-distilled essential oil of Indonesian white oud or gaharu buaya (Aetoxylon sympetalum) is certainly an awe inspiring scent, with its evocative, warm, umami, damp, smoky head notes. Its as if one were in the presence of a decomposing fallen tree trunk in the middle of a tropical forest, with its microcosm of moss, mold, lichen, parasol mushrooms, molds, burrowing insects. And notably salty, animalic undercurrent lends a seductive element to this essential oil as it mellows on the perfume strip.
A few hours into the dry down, the Indonesian white oud develops into a softer, peppery, guaiacwood-like rare woods aroma, while the slightest ember of smoke remains. This evocative material pairs nicely with white florals, rose cedars, jasmine, sandalwoods, and could be an evocative contribution to leather accords, incense, ambers, campfire accords, and tobacco blends.
Gaharu Buaya is a wood obtained from the only species of the Aetoxylon genus. The name is thought to originate from the term Buaya meaning “Crocodile” in Indonesia. Not only are the trees found in swampy forests, but the term is also used from people considered to be “big liars”. Gahaur Buaya is often sold incorrectly as Agarwood, this perfume essence is also used in the production of oud oil as an adulterant. The essential oil helps “extend” the much more expensive oil from Aquilaria species making various Oudh oils either more affordable or more profitable.
This pure fragrance oil is made of selected resinous wood of Aetoxylon Sympetalum species. This is known as Gaharu Buaya in Indonesia. It is a slightly different aroma to the normal Oudh oils, but the highest quality Oudh oils are derived from Gyrinpos & Aquileria species of trees whereas this is from the Aetoxylon tree. The Gaharu Buaya oil is less expensive than pure Oudh as they grow fairly easily and quickly. This Gaharu Buaya has been obtained from trees in Indonesia. In countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, Oudh is referred to as simply Gaharu.
